Going the extra mile…
I hear this all the time at work, from bosses and mentors. In fact, I say this too. In a corporate or work setup, when someone tells us to go the extra mile, we sometimes think (or say) “Why should I? Will I get an increase, bonus or promotion?” or “Why should I, (name of colleague/customer/boss) is not doing it?”
So why should you go the extra mile?
My answer to that question is also a question… Whose journey are you in, anyway? If you’re working for someone (ex. as an employee, as a service provider, etc), you might say something like “This is actually my boss’s journey” or “This is my company’s journey and it’s just going to make them richer but doesn’t do me any good.” Well, the good news is, you may be right. The bad news is, this could be a sign that you’re in the wrong place, doing the wrong thing… doing things out of need, rather than out of desire.
You see, you don’t have to be self-employed or a business owner to be in YOUR own journey. In fact, you should be in your own journey no matter what state or season of life you are in. Your journey is the path you make toward your own GOALS. It may be a goal to be the Department VP, to start your own business, to lose 10 kilos, to be a lawyer, etc. And if you look at it that way, going the extra mile is no longer something you do out of need or command but rather something you do out of choice and desire…
Because that extra mile is never wasted, if it gets you a mile closer to your goal(s).
So even if your client or boss or colleague is not doing it, or even if you feel that you will not get immediate results, do not hesitate to go the extra mile no matter how big or small the task is, as long as you are certain that you’re on your own journey toward your goals.
